Dutch Farm Distillery
“From crop to glass“
A single estate distillery, that’s what makes Kalkwijck Distillers unique. The grain that forms the basis for our alcohol is grown on the estate surrounding the old farm. We control the whole process, from grain to bottle, to distil our high-quality drinks in an authentic manner to retain the very best of the countryside.

A rich history
Reclamation
Around two centuries ago, the east of the Netherlands consisted mostly of wild vegetation and wet peatland. There wasn’t much more. But the growing demand for fuel caused the reclamation of the peatland in Twente. Suffering under miserable circumstances, the workers on the peatland changed the rough nature into vast plains. The drainage was effectuated by wijken (peat ditches) and the peat could be transported via the canals. The remaining plains gave the opportunity for farmers to settle.

Agriculture
In 1803, a farm was founded and two centuries later it is still owned by the family Benus. The oud Groningse farm in Vroomshoop, built in 1903, still breaths the long history in which the company has had much to endure. The reclamation of the peatlands can still be recognised at the estate with many wijken, nowadays functioning as ditches. Another memory is the street running along the farm, named after the nowadays filled up Kalkwijk canal.

Distillery
After two centuries, the farm still produces crops, like potatoes, green maize, rye and malting barley. However, it is not anymore just the growing of crops. In 2009, the farm was extended with a distillery. Our own crops are used to distil high-quality alcohol in an authentic manner, a special trade in the Netherlands. The alcohol is used to produce award-winning liquor, from liqueur to jenever and whisky.
